Hard Drive Not Recognized???Help!

Hi everyone!

Today i had a 160gb hard drive formatted by a certified technician. It will be used for storage of pictures/videos/mp3's. Now since i have a 20gb hard drive running my computer (Drive C), this hard drive (160gb) is supposed to be a "slave" drive (Drive D). I have a sliding tray in which my slave hard drives go into when i use them.

My question is why is my computer not recognizing this new 160gb hard drive? The jumper settings appear to be ok and when i first start up my computer (for about 1 second) it says that the drive is detected but in my windows explorer there is no sign of this drive (Drive D) anywhere?

Is there anything i can do to in "settings" somewhere so that i can make this drive recognizeable by windows explorer? I am running windows 98se on an amd duron 600 with 128mb of ram. Is it possible the hard drive is too big to be recognized by windows 98se? All of my other 80gb hard drives work fine.

Thanks everyone for any help. I don't know much about computers so i'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction here.

Many problems here... Did this "certified technition" have any idea of your computer because many red lights should of come on as soon as you mentioned it :P

First off, earlier version of XP have problems detecting more than 120G, so I SERIOUSLY doublt 98 will be able to detect the whole drive. You also didn't mention how the drive was formatted. Seeing as most people use NTFS(which isn't compatable with 98) I assume that's what he used...

Also, some computers have problems with such large drives. THis machine being only 600MHz, I wouldn't be suprised if it hit some limit... Though if it seems to be detected in the BIOS alright, I suppose it's ok.

I can go though the steps if you want to try and get that drive working, but I really don't think you'll have too much luck with 98's drive limitations...

Thanks for the feedback!

Well, all of my 80gb hard drives work fine on my machine, i was kind of hoping this 160gb hard drive would also work:(

How can i know if the hard drive has been set up properly/formatted properly? How do i check the settings on my computer? Thanks again for your time!

"While the FAT32 file system can support drives up to a standard theoretical size of 2 terabytes, (it 'can' be jury-rigged under Windows Millennium Edition to support partitions of up to 8 TB), Windows 2000 Professional and XP Professional cannot FORMAT a volume larger than 32 GB in size using their native FAT32 file system.

Something I found... I think the actual support size is questionable in 98, but I'm pretty sure dad had problems with 120G drive in 2000, and it wasn't motherboard related. Though, I know you can at least have 40G drives in 98... Hmph...so many stupid limitations!

So basically this new 160 hard drive isn't of any use for me:(

Since i already have 12 X 80gb hard drives that work i guess i should just go buy another 80gb since i know they will work with windows 98se.
