Hard Drive not recognized

i just bought a 320gb western digital harddrive with a external usb case but it does not show up in my computer. It is recognized by my computer and shows up in the disk management. but it does not let me format it or anything. what can i do to format my harddrive so i can use it? or can i do anything other than format it to make the hard drive working?
 
or right click on My Computer, go to Properties, then Hardware tab, then Device Manager, click on Disk Drives, go to Action and click on Scan for Hardware Changes, it should work if the device is attached.
 
i had to right click on my computer and go to manage. it did not recognize anywhere other than that. thax for the help tho.
 
well if it doesn't show up in the My Computer window, you can simply type the letter of that drive [iif you know the drive letter or you already assigned one] in the address bar with a colon in front of it, say the letter is e, you type e: and hit enter, if that doesn't work go back to manage hardware management and do what I told you once more, at least for while you'll be able to make it work. Mine is doing that all the time. So if it keeps doing that for a while it's because something is really wrong.
