A high reallocated sector count is a sign of a problem, if the drive they gave you was reporting that from the start you were likely given a bad drive.
It's possible that a drive can be damaged by other components but I think it's more likely that you were just given a drive that was already on it's way out. The most common things that can cause other parts to fail would damage more than just the drive.
