Hi,
I have a portable wd 160gb harddrive and it has been disconnecting on its own. I have it under 3 year warrenty and went into harvey norman where i brought it and they told me to reformat it and if it still did it then they know it is something wrong. I reckon it is cable. I have reformated and still doing it. Any good program to test if it is the drive or is cable so i can hopefully get a new one then casue it is annoying having it drop out suddenly.

Try a different cable. They work with any mini usb cable. If it still screws up then you know it is the drive.

I can already tell you what it is...and it isn't the cable. It's the drive. Take it back and tell them to give you anything but a WD.. If they built the thing themselves, they didn't jump option 1.. and they probably put it in a cheap crap cabinet, which makes matters worse. I've had problems with the 160s and finding a cabinet that actually worked with them.

Either way get rid of it.

i'm assuming you have a 3 yr wd warranty. if that's so then wd will just give you another wd.

i also suspect the cable. especially if the drive goes on/off/on/off. that would mean you're not giving it enough power. look for a cable that splits into 2 usb heads: a data head and a power head.
