Hard drive problem

A few months ago I had a problem with my computer and whilst troubleshooting I unplugged my hard drive so I could get that bunch of cords out of the way and after plugging it in and fixing the problem whenever I click to open my harddrive in "Computer" my fan kicks up and gets really loud and the it takes a few seconds to open it up. Is there something I can do, is this a problem. Im somewhat concerned because if my hard drive is slow it could make programs run slow and I don't want that.
Any suggestions would help a ton,

SATA or IDE hard drive? You didn't unplug it while power was on did you? I would say you need to run a disk diagnostic check on it now by running the hard drive makers disk diagnostic utility. What brand of hard drive is it?
