Hard Drive problem?

Hey guys.

Recently had a problem with my desktop PC. It switched itself off on one occasion, but when I went to turn it back on, it told me that the machine had suffered a shutdown, and I was given the options of running the windows recovery or running it normally. With both options I have recieved a problem.

When choosing to run the recovery program, the computer seems to stall and I end up with a blank screen. However, when choosing to run as normal, the windows loader appears, but before the windows image begins to appear, the computer suddenly restarts. Once this has happened, it then tells me there is no bootable device, and the machine can no longer find the hard drive.

I have checked all of the cables, and everything is in the correct place, so I'm at a bit of a cross roads. Just wondering what you guys think? I have been considering replacing the hard drive, but obviously dont want to lose the data, so maybe I can use my USB to SATA cable to remove the data. Although does this sound like a HD problem?

The PC was a new build, no name, and it is as follows...

Operating system: Windows 7 32-Bit
Motherboard: ASUS P5KPL-AM
RAM: Elixir 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400U
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200 500GB
Optical: Standard DVD-RW/R
PSU: AlphaPower ATX-450 (450w)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad

The machine has been running fine for over a year, and now, nothing. Hope you guys can help, cheers.
