Hard drive problem

Hi, I have an old IBM Deskstar 41gig hard drive. There was a problem with it about 1 year ago when it would not boot properly and made chugging noises, I got it working with F Disk and partitioned it into 3 drives and it has been fine ever since although I did have to reinstall the OS and lost all files and work. Now the same thing is hapening and I do not want to run f disk as I do not want to lose files and work.

After the initial boot and memory check it says IDE0 disk read error reboot.

Can anyone help me or do I need a new Drive?

well whenever you think a drive is even starting to go bad, you oughta rush off to the store as soon as possible and get a new one to keep from losing your data. You can try safe mode or repairing an xp installation, but no guarantees. If you get it up and running again, do yourself a favor and backup all your important data as it will likely happen again quite soon
 
Did you know that those drives are referred to as "deathstars?" That's because they have a terrible reputation for premature failure.

I agree with steve... run out and invest in a new drive.

Thanks Guys, I thought I would have to get a new drive, could probably save data by setting it as a slave with the new one, will try it.
 
i think having a drive fail ONCE is enough to get a new one.

if you got sick three times out of four at a restaraunt you went to, chances are you wouldnt want to go back for a fifth time.
