Does anybody know of a way to get information back off of a harddrive that's seems to not be getting any power to it. I don't know what happoned not long ago, but one harddrive won't get power anymore (my slave drive 160gb with all my music, pictures and anime/videos on it) and i can't get any of the other harddrives to work anymore. i'm using a brand new one now. anywayz, just looking for some tricks to get it running for alittle bit so i can get some stuff back off of it. thanks

have you tried the drive in another computer? If it still doesn't work you're probably s.o.l if it won't even spin

Harddrives usually have either a 1) Power problem or 2) internal
read/write hardware problem.

The internal read/write hardware problem will usually include some
type of clicking noise. This usually results in an useless drive.

The power problem that you seem to have can sometimes be
solved by replacing the circuit board on the harddrive. You would
need to find another drive that is the EXACT same manufacturer
and model number so the circuit board would be the same. Then
just swap the circuit board.

If the original drive didn't have the click problem associated with
an internal problem then a new circuit board MIGHT power the
old drive up and allow you to get your information off.

You might also check the circuit board on the original drive and
see if you see any burnt chips etc that would let you know that
the board is not any good.

Ebay is probably the best place to look for the circuit board. That
is one of the reasons you see alot of non-working drive for
sale.

sounds like you put the power molex on the hdd the wrong way round and shorted the hdd dont know of anything you can do

I'll try what you suggested ramdge. hopefully it will work. does the curcuit board dissconnect from the harddrive pretty easy?

Some harddrive circuit boards just unscrew with 3 or 4 screws then
lift right off. Some have an additional cable to undo. The screws
are usually a hex type so a regular screw driver usually won't work.

Just turn the drive over and you should see the screws that you need
to remove. If you have the cable, it should be visible. If not then the
circuit board will press down on the actual drive so make sure that
you pull it straight up once all the screws are out.

Good luck
