OK, I have a maxtor hard drive and the jumpers settings are CS, master, slave. If it is the only hard drive and the only thing on the IDE primary 1 should it be on master or CS? Also what does CS mean?

First you need a Welcome to the Computer Forum! http://www.computerforum.com/70672-official-welcome-thread.html and just a reminder to new members to review the http://www.computerforum.com/52038-forum-rules.html

In most cases a single hard drive will be plugged into the end connector on the ide cable and set as master. For a number of prebuilt systems you may find that no drive jumper will be seen at times for the CS(cable select) position. A second drive added on the cable is usually set to the slave setting unless in the case of hard drives not cd or dvd optical drives the drive isn't seen by the operating system installed. Then the cable select setting is used.

Since its the only one on the cable, you can set it to master . I would not use cable select.
