hard drive question

Why do you need to partition a hard disk before you use it for data storage and not partition other storage devices, such as a floppy disk and an optical disk drive?

u dont "have to" partition it before you use it, it is just easier and more recrommended because if u partition it afterwards when u have data on it, some of it could get erased

and how could you possibly partition a floppy? its 1.4mb
and an optical disk drive? what does that even mean, i think u mean a cd, u cant partition something that just reads data

It does need a partition AND if you don't and try after, all of it would get erased, not just some.

There are also Magneto-Optical Drives (such as LS-120's) which can be partitioned, but I'm not to sure how many people use/can afford those anymore.

If you use Norton Partition Magic, you can create/merge/delete/ect to partitions, and no data will be lossed.

And what do you mean you have to make a partition? You can just format the hard drive and not make any other partitions.

i use/install eod discs/drives at work (medical pc's) and we have to format the eod discs before use... i don't know why they use those given the price...

i haven't used a floppy for years, but weren't they preformatted anyhow?

I think he might have meant when installing XP.

Formatting does not create a partition, it simply wipes the drive.

Of course, no need to partition those, but you need to format them every now and again seeing as how they die so often.

They have a lifespan of 30 or so years.

He's talking about his Magneto-Optical drives. Extremely expensive, but last forever....around 30 years.

Hey

Kinda off topic but Verbatim claims it's metal die DVDs will last for 100 years. Why go for MODs? Anyway.... just a mention.
