hello..... i have a HP Pavilion xt936 and i recently acquired a dimension 8200...... the 8200 doesnt have a hard drive so i was wondering a few things.....

1. can i take the hard drive out of the hp and put it in the dell.....(it fits very loosely in the bay)?
2. if i do this and reinstall windows onto the dell will it erase everything currently on the hard drive?

First you need a Welcome to the Computer Forum! http://www.computerforum.com/70672-official-welcome-thread.html and the quick reminder given to new members to review the http://www.computerforum.com/52038-forum-rules.html

It seems the Dell has a mounting problem more then anything else there. A standard ATA 66/100/133 ide drive can be moved from system to system and still be usable. For the second question the usual answer is to plan a drive wipe for a fresh copy of Windows to go on a clean partition. For simply reinstalling Windows the Windows, Program Files, and DocumentsandSettings directories are deleted on the current installation to see new ones created. All other files and folders elsewhere on a drive remain intact.

The smart move however is the common recommendation of backing up any important files prior to seeing that happen. Nothing works better on a new system then a clean copy of Windows on a fresh primary. Windows runs much faster there.

That loose mounting in the Dell case is a concern there. Dell is often something else with their cases. On the older models you couldn't simply replace a standard atx power supply for their since they custom mounted them by changing the bolt pattern. You had to buy "their" replacements then. The quality of their newer cases also appear shabby over the options custom builders have these days. Hopefully you won't have problems mounting it there.
