Hard drive spins intermittantly after power down

Last week when powering down, instead of the normal 'quick' shut down, the hard drive (or maybe fan come to think of it, not sure) sounded like a jet engine slowing down. It was a gradual decrease of volume vs the 'instant' shudown is the point I'm trying to make. (not too well lol)

I haven't turned on the machine in days but last night went into the bedroom and heard rhythmics 'mini boom'. Here the PC's power and HD lights are flickering and i guess the drives were 'spinning up and down.' I didnt have time to open the case but will tonight after i plug the cord back in.

Power supply? other ideas? It's a 2 yr old antec as when i upgraded to P4 I needed a new PS. I hope it's not it as i dont have the receipt handy or know how long the warranty is.

How do you diagnose a problem like this? I've never run into anything like it before.

good idea ....will do that..

still freaks me out to have had a continually flicker/upspin of the hard drive likely for the days i was away

got home, plugged in the machine and it didnt do it....booted and it was fine and everything worked normally.

I ran a scandisk and went away for a bit. Came back and the computer was booted up ok. I dont know the results of the scandisk and didnt have time to look for a log. Assume it's something like scandisk.log?

Then shut it down. No lights were on and it was totally dead like it's supposed to be.

2 hours later came back in the room and it was cycling on and off. With the cover off i could see the fans starting up and then shutting down right away. And both lights flickered. I unplugged and went to bed.

sounds like your PSU is going shizophrenic.. At least... by the sound of it for me., its the PSU. the pc is booting, and the power gets cut again,.

just a suggestion... if the pc does that booting/powering down thingy again... try to boot it up then, im curious weither it continues that weird cycle.. or it just boots as normal.

sorry took so long to get back...was away.

actually yes it is very freaky to see the 2 lights blinking as if trying to boot, but it only lasts maybe 1 second then dies down. Then cycles again. It's a rhythmic sound from the spinning then turning off. Annoying yet peaceful lol. The PC never boots unless I press the power button and once running, runs great.

I'll have to dig up my antec receipt and see if they will give me a new one based on the description of the problem.
