Hi XP_Office.

Do you mean that you want to backup your 500GB drive to your 120GB drive?

It really depends on how full your 500GB drive is and what type of files they are. You could use some desktop compression utility (zip, tar etc) or a program like Symantec Ghost. Both options will basically create a single file with the entire contents of your 500GB drive. I will warn that this is more for archival purposes and if you're regally accessing this data neither technique is ideal.

You can make a backup with no problem. Whether you use a hardware backup, i.e External hard drive, flash drive, zip drive, etc. Or you may go the route mentioned above by creating a complete compressed backup, i.e .Zip, .Rar, .Tar, or true backup/copy software. I'm more of a hardware guy on this subject, copy-paste never hurts ;)

so if i copy and paste everything onto my 120gb from my 500gb it will boot up normally thats wrong because the hardware signature will be different for the hard drive

Wrong. You would be missing some system files and possible the MBR. You need to actually clone it. Then it will work.

What brand is the new hard drive? Or maybe it isn't new, but the one you are wanting to clone it to.
