Hard drive use while copying

When I am copying files from my DVD drive to an external HDD, my internal HDD useage light remains constant.

Why is my HDD being used when copying from one thing to another?

Will this wear my HDD out?

I have approx. 80 DVDs to copy.

If your hard drive lasts six months it will very likely last you several years (unless the hard drive get physically abused or you experience a power surge).

I read with most hard disk drives the part will show if it has defects within the first six months.
