Hard Drive Utilities?

I am looking for a utility I can put on a flash drive or Burn onto a CD or DVD that I can pop in to test hard drives even if it does not have an OS on it. Something open source would be great. I am having some issues with a few HD. What do you guys recommend?

Also, I have seen these adapters that can make SATA hard drives except the IDE hook ups? Do these work well. I have a stack of Sata HDs and would like to get a few desk tops up and going with them but all the motherboards are for IDEs.

Thanks everyone

You basically need to download the drive diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturer and make a bootable cd of it. If you give me the models of drives you have, I can link you to the correct software.

As far as SATA to IDE adapters go, some work, some don't. I don't really recommend them.

Thanks so much for the help! I have one of them I think fixed. I hope. I was getting a weird error I never seen before. I thought maybe it was the HDD but I mighthave fixed it. I will know in a little bit. The error was

Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition

I think I just had it plugged in the wrong port. I am still getting the ultimate boot CD.

I really like this forum. I just found it last night. Great job on everything!

Sounds like your boot.ini has a problem. If you have a windows disc try booting to the recovery console and running fixboot.
