just wondering if quality of harddrives really matters,
im planing on building a core i7 rig and was wondering whether or not to worry about getting a 150gb wd velociraptor drive to run games ect from and get 500gb for storage of movies music ect. is there anypoint in spending the extra 200 or should i just go for more space

The VelociRaptor hard drives do have faster data transfer rates over normal hard drives, but I have read that they fail a little more often than normal hard drives. VelociRaptor drives have a five year warranty on them. The biggest downside of these hard drives is the heat they create since they spin at around 10,000 rotations per minute. If you have a good cooling on them it shouldn't be a problem.

I wouldn't buy any hard drives other than Western Digital and Seagate.

Edit:

Read thru this thread about different hard drives:

Actually a 32Mb cache drive @ 7200 RPM should be fine.

I've read that 2 x 32Mb cache 7200 RPM drives in RAID outperform a single Velociraptor.
