hardrive problem?

I normally know what I am doing, but this, I just can't do anything...

It opens past the slash screen does all that fine, but then it just goes black.. After several reboots this still won't load, left it for a day, then came back to it... Of course this suggests a hardrive problem, but its connected I've did one red and re)connected it... But also, when I go to boot a windows XP cd, it won't let me, opens says 'press any key from cd' then goes black and the whole thing freezes.. What do I do? Help?

Have you recently changed BIOS settings? Make sure you're using IDE mode (not AHCI). Try resetting BIOS to factory defaults.
Who's the HDD manufacturer?
The first thing to try, would be to unplug the HDD from the computer, and try booting up from the XP CD, without the HDD plugged it. Let us know how that goes.

I'd look for burst capacitors on your motherboard, if it boots off dvd when your hdd is disconnected try another (good) drive, if problem doesnt replicate then your drive might have bit the dust
You can also try booting a linux live cd/usb. If you have a drive problem you'll usually see a loop while loading sata/ide drives and i think it will tell you which port is bad.

Try cleaning the connector pins on the back of your HDD, and the pins on the motherboard where the HDD cable connects. Once you are sure you have done your best to clean the contact pins, plug your HDD back and try booting up from the OS CD, see if you can get past the "press any key to boot from DVD menu". Let us know how that goes. If you are using a PATA HDD, make sure the master/slave jumper on the HDD is set correctly.
