Hi can anyone help me with the following problem?
My computer often stops temporarily while it seems that it is searching on the hard disk in very short repeated sequences. When it does this, it “freezes” for up to half a minute, where after it works perfectly again. This mostly happens when I am opening a program or a file.
It has been completely cleaned for old registries and dead files, which did not change anything (neither worse nor better). The problem is not program specific, but mostly Norton is affected, which among others mean that it takes 4 hours to make a complete scan instead of 2.
I have run chkdsk, but when chkdsk comes to step 4, the problem re-occurs and this does not change. I have stopped chkdsk, when this has been going on for half an hour or so.
My hard disc is a 60 GB Toshiba mk6021gas. I can’t find any diagnostics tool for it on the net (also not on the Toshiba homepage). I have about 25% free space on the hard disc. It has not helped to run disc fragmenting.
I have run WinXP manager, which has made the computer faster, but not solved the problem.
Right now the sound is also strange, especially when I run more than one program.
Is there any good advice out there? Is this a hardware or a software problem?
