hardware removal?

hey everyone, my friends got an inspiron 600m, and it comes with a cd-r/dvd rom drive. i cant figure out why the icon for disconnecting hardware is always in the corner (its saying its safe to eject the drive). as far as i know, the drive is not aftermarket, and theres no reason to disconnect it. it works perfectly, but having the icon in the taskbar is annoying, because nobody is ever going to have to eject the drive (i say that for the sake of this situation). anyway, i tried it once, and sure enough, the drive disappeared from my computer, but upon restarting it it came back. is there any way i can just disable this? why would the computer think i would want to take it out? thanks.

that icon usually appears for usb devices. You have to safely remove them from your system before pulling it out or you could possibly damage the usb device. Not sure why it would come up for a cdrom?

You can set the icon to autohide by right clicking on the taskbar -> Properties -> Customize (Hide inactive icons must be ticked). Find the Safely Remove Icon and select Always Hide.

It might think its a external drive.

Ahhh i see what it it. I think that model is the one where you can swap the CD-rom drive for a floppy drive. Look no the bottom and there might be a release button.

well it came with the computer, so i doubt that would be it (UNLESS.....i mean, it is a dell) but ill try hiding it. its nothing urgent, just an annoyance (i have a thing about keeping computers neat and orderly)

strange

Yeah, very strange
This message occurs when attaching removable media such as mentioned, USB devices including cameras, flash drives etc.
Try checking the drivers for the drive, updating them may solve the problem
Seeing as it came with the computer, im almost certain it wont actually be an external drive:)
