I heard that a virus can affect bios and hardware

What exactly can these viruses do, normal virus stuff or just stop the computer from turning on?

A hardware virus is written to to target a specific hardware component. It can either sabotage your system's integrity or destroy the targeted hardware.

Some software viruses are hardware-resident meaning that they hide within a certain hardware. Such as memory(this includes system and video memory), BIOS chips, Cache, hard-drive boot sectors. But these usually do not harm the hardware that they reside in.
