Has computer gaming become to elite?

My first thread here...

Meaning system requirements, fast processor's, lot's of ram, really good video card.cable or dsl, etc....
Im going to get back into gaming ,most likely a fps type, but i i will have to really upgrade which i hope to do very soon.
But i wanted to get your opinion on this to hear your thought's.

Plus i thought this may be a good first thread post for me. :D
obtw.... great forum and lot of really good information here.

It could be less elite now because it's easier to find help on topics. In the PC gaming days before the internet it was much more elite.

I have a letter at home from where my brother and I wrote Sierra to get help on a part on a Kings Quest game (or was it Manhunter). They wrote back and gave the tip to get past the part of the game in question.

PC gaming has always and will most likely always be superior to consoles and at the bleeding edge thus more costly. I mean our most modern systems currently could easily destroy the 360/PS3 both in graphics + processing with little effort. I personally would love to see PS3/360 just make emulators for PCs. Save us all some time waiting for the community to do it for them :P

However back in 2000 or so they realized they didn't have to make good games with real mechanics/story lines/gameplay and people would keep buying them...and so now 1/9 games are good and 1-2 titles a year = great if we are lucky.
Gaming in general is in a poor state anymore so nothing is "elite" anymore. I find myself playing old titles like FFII-III on SNES / Diablo / Neverwinter Nights / Baldurs Gate / Icewind etc for my RPG fixes.

The average person simply can't afford all the gadgets for a good gaming PC. However, like always, the average person simply doesn't care to learn how to build a good gaming PC, or even how to pick one out at a store. It's always been elite to an extent, in my opinion.

Gaming on extreme game builds is a myth and marketing scheme. You don't need xfire or SLI and you don't need 8gigs of RAM and super fast hard drives.

My machine maxes all games out, even Crysis and it is all playable and my specs are:

Intel Q9560
4Gig RAM
Asus P5N mobo
EVGA GTX 260
Antec Q850 True PSU

I play the following games on max settings:

COD4
COD MW2
BF BC2
L4D
L4D 2
every source game

Developers don't develop games for $2,000 gaming rigs. However, if you do want to game you are going to need to spend some money. If all you are doing is building a tower (no keyboard, mouse, monitor needed), you can easily build one in the $700 to $900 range. To me, that is not that expensive for a good computer, so I guess it is all about your perspective as well.

Granted I dropped $1400 on mine, but I also had a 22" Samsung LCD in there as well

I'm playing Uncharted 2 now on my PS3. It has some very nice graphics. On my 50" 1080p screen I really can't complain. It's also one of the best looking console games around, but consoles do have the capability to have some great looking games. Yet I can't remember an instance of where the PC version didn't look better.

I really wasn't trying to imply a money issue, but four sure comp's are high for your average customer unless you can build one.

I mean you would think that game designer's would keep the spec's low to have a bigger following i may be wrong.

And third, are you still having to upgrade the graphics card to the new comp's you buy out of the store brand new?

An interesting question for sure. I think more likely is not that games have gotten too elite for computers, but that with all we expect a computer to do, we're being very sloppy as to where the resources are going. I'd love to see a gaming mode for a pc where all non-essential processes are shut down.

If anyone was trying, they could still build a gaming computer that was faster than any console. For instance, the xbox 360 has a great processor, but doesn't have very much RAM and the graphics card isn't the top of the line so far as I can tell. I think that you could still find a better CPU.

I think the biggest diference between the two is that the consoles are dedicated mostly to gaming. The console software can be streamlined for gaming, because the makers know that it won't be used for much else (mostly). We expect more out of our computers, so the software isn't always keeping our games running smoothly, it's also running 200 other processes, most of which we don't even need.

So... no. Not elite. We're just getting dumb.

The bottom line for me, is that i cannot play with a pad i have to use a keyboard and mouse. My brain doesn't except the pad concept, so PC gaming is the place for me.

You got people that still play the Quake and unreal series online, those game's will go down in gamer history as legend's or they may already have. Im sure you know some also.

Ive just been away from it a few year's and getting settled in again,so im going to get a good system and then back into the old frag zone :)

Anyone know what's the popular FPS game is at the moment, i know i can look it up but i like actual input from people who play or have heard first hand. *Thank's People* have a safe and fun weekend.

That's really a good question. In my experience I have always thought console gaming to be "where it's at", ONLY because I have serious issues with WASD, I still to this day cannot get it down, no matter how hard I try. And don't even get me started with mouse controls. But lately more and more pc games have been putting in the option for wired or wireless xbox controllers, which is perfect because you have the best of both worlds. You've got (for me anyway) the ease of a controller with analog capability, matched with the sheer power of overclocked cpu and vga. Beautiful. As far as price goes, it can get very damn expensive if you want the best, but take my system for instance, it is by far not the best at all, but it plays graphics heavy games like cyrsis on very high settings and nothing is overclocked. And I only spent a little over $800 building
it. So in the end is P.C gaming elite? Yes and No lol. :D

yes but when HALO 3 came out who knows if it will happen ive been searching but no luck to my knowledge i couldnt wait for pc so 360 was the only option

What? He's saying that he thinks any system with an Intel Core2Duo is faster than an Xbox 360. Which is probably true assuming the graphics card isn't a P.O.S. like onboard or something.

Consoles use RISC based PPC processors developed my IBM and the PS3 uses a newer form of PPC called cell. They run limited embedded OSes and are built for gaming. They don't do too bad.

I think he meant although PCs are more powerful, even lower end ones, they don't have all of the games that may be wanted. I agree with him, I game on my PC more, but would still have my xbox to play forza and music games on, because they aren't on PC
