Has my GPU just effed up? (Hardware problems)

So I was playing Metro 2033 when my PC clicked and shut off (no explosion, no smells, no loud noise, no smoke or anything), at first I thought it was a power cut then after what seemed an eternity but was probably about 2 seconds, I noticed my TV was still on, I spent a few hours trying to work out what was wrong but couldn't work out, but I have found out the following and was wondering if anybody could pinpoint based on experience of knowledge.

When my GPU is removed and I use the VGA from the motherboard to a standard PC monitor I can get my PC up and running with no problems...

BUT... As soon as my GPU is put in, I am unable to get any kind of video signal at all - regardless of the fact I usually play via HDMI cable to my HDTV, and even when I try the VGA from the mobo, if the GPU is in, I get nothing.

I've tried going into BIOS, setting the INIT DISPLAY to PEG then disabling onboard and it doesn't seem to do anything.

My PC parts:

Mobo: Gigabyte Z77-DS3H
GPU: XFX HD7850
CPU: i5-3450k
PSU: OCZ ZS 550Watts

(I don't think this is relevant and I forget my exact RAM but it's 2x4Gb DDR3 and my HDD is a 7200RPM 1Tb drive)

what are the option for the display in the BIOS? should be one saying PCI-E or something, IDK about PEG

PEG does mean PCIe slot. PEG means PCI Express Graphics.

Sounds like your video card went out or your 12V rail on your power supply is going south. Got another computer you could try your video card on, or some one with a computer that would let you try it on?

I have an old 9800GT which could serve as a replacement till I get a new GPU if that is the problem - and yes, I've attached what I took a while ago for reference, hope it's helpful - to answer your question, I have no other PC to test my GPU on :( should I try my 9800GT to see if it's the rail or not?

Yeah sure, try the 9800GT and see what happens. Just make sure you have the Unit Display first set to PEG.

Ok, sorry for the late reply but I put my old 9800GT in and it worked fine - I put a BRAND NEW HD7850 in and the same problem, however, when I used a DVI to HDMI adapter (I think it was DVI) in the HD7850, I was able to load up fine - I am still absolutely clueless as to what is happening :/
