Have a question about what could be wrong with my laptop?

I have an HP Pavillion m6 and whenever i try to turn on my computer, it will do the "Startup Repair" and then when i select that, it will go to the blue "Welcome" screen but this time its gray and white and my mouse in the middle with nothing else. When i start it normally, same thing happens. Also tried to run the diagnostic, it gets to 92% and freezes, also when i tried to do the full restore to factory defaults, nothing happens.

Is it a broken HDD? If so, what kind would i need to buy to replace it? Also, would i need to buy other stuff too when i replace the HDD? like a disc that has all the basic programs like Windows 7/8 or what i need to run the computer like it was when i first bought it?

What brand of hard drive is it? You should do a hdd diagnostic using the hard drive makers disk diagnostic program.

You may have virus or malware that corrupted the operating system and the recovery partition, the hard drive may be ok or it could be failing.
Please give us the complete model number example : hp pavilion m6-1000XX
Here are a couple of things to test for us:
1- unplug power cord and remove battery then press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Connect the charging cord only and turn on. (tell us what happens, some have found this simple fix if lucky, solves there problem.)
then reinstall the battery.
If needed go to step 2
2- remove power cord and battery, remove the hard drive. Next plug in power cord and turn on the laptop tell us if you get a post screen (tell us what it says)
3- if you do not get a post screen take out one memory stick and see if it post.
All of these test are testing your board, processor and memory. The last test would be to hit f2 at startup to go into bios and see if it list your hard drive.
Hopefully everything test ok and you would just need to order the recovery media from Hp. Around $35 plus shipping last time I ordered some.
Post back what you found to solve issue or request additional help.
