Have I been mugged off?

Howdy folks,

I have a quick question for you all. I have been planning for quite some time now to upgrade the amount of storage space I have on my home PC. Previously, I had hoped to go for an internal hard drive, however, my girlfriend has now bought a laptop with a crap amount of memory space, so I thought about an external drive (by USB 2.0) so she can use it too... (I know, visions of shoes on JPGs filling it up...)

One of the lads I know who builds PCs as a hobby has said that my motherboard may only support up to a certain limit... Is he having me on? If not, how can I find out what the limit is?

Appreciate any help you can give

There is no such thing as a motherboard limiting the amount of external space that a laptop can have. What he may have been talking about is the amount of USB ports that you have available, you might need to buy a hub.

Thanks for getting back so quickly.

It's not just the laptop that will be using it... My desktop has plenty of ports available and just wanted to double check this...

for a USB HD you only need 1 port per computer...you mentioned "memory space" in your first post that may also be what your friend is talking about most motherboards support only 2 - 4 ram slots (i don't think this is what you meant tho)
