Having an odd connectivity problem with my Acer laptop

So I recently moved into a new city and have been almost entirely unsuccessful at getting connected to the internet in my apartment.

Equipment: Acer Aspire One, Windows XP, Router.

Here's the scenario: I click the network and enter the password. Hey presto, 1 minute later it says I'm connected. Funny thing is, I'm only receiving a couple packets and can't open any internet pages. So it says I'm connected but I'm actually not.

I have tried refreshing my IP info via the cmd prompt and fiddling with the various security settings of the router (default WPA2, but also tried WEP and WPA) to no avail. The only thing that lets me connect is turning of wireless security altogether, which is dangerous of course but until then it's the only thing I can do to get on the internet.

Anyone have any ideas? I will be happy to provide further info to the best of my ability.
 
Try going into network and sharing center, click on the left where it says manage wireless connections and delete the existing wireless network and set it backup. Sometimes the wireless profile for the network just gets corrupted. You may also need to update the driver for the wireless card if its a security setting issue.

Thanks. I tried deleting the driver via device manager and that didn't work (it just re-installed the exact same thing and gave the exact same problem), so I went to http://www.atheros.cz and found that there was indeed a newer driver for my card, which I had to manually install, but it fixed the problem. Neither Acer support nor my laptop indicated that there was a newer driver out which was quite frustrating.
