Hi everyone, I am having an issues trying to get the windows 10 upgrade on 2 computers that are running 8.1. I did the cmd of wuauclt.exe/update it says windows 10 is installing, but then changes to updates for 8.1. even after I let it update for 8.1, it still wont download 10. the other machine wont even let me get to the point of it saying downloading 10.
Also I have an alienware aurora that is running Windows 7, windows 10 installed but wouldn't work so it automatically reverted back to 7. any ideas?

Seems windows 10 upgrade problems are pretty common on factory built machines, I have tried about 10 times to update a Lenovo B50 using various different methods, all to no avail

You've done a full format and attempted to install via USB and it still doesn't work? What does it do when you try that option?

No that is the only thing I am not sure I can do as it is a factory built Lenovo, I think to get your free Windows 10 key, you have to upgrade the 1st time instead of clean install ?

I just now realized that you weren't the OP in this thread. :P You are correct, I remembered that after posting but also wondered because you had said that you tried using the USB creation tool. I believe that the W10 copy is tied to the hardware itself on the computer and/or the Microsoft account you activated it with. How exactly is it failing for you? Error message? Hang on install? Can't even start it?

To OP, this link is your best bet if you haven't tried it already. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

I upgraded Windows 8.1 Pro on a Dell laptop with no problems. I used the Media Creation Tool to download the Windows 10 Pro ISO file. I right-clicked on the ISO file and mounted it. I double-clicked the setup.exe program there to start the upgrade process.

This shows you don't have to burn a DVD to upgrade Windows 8/8.1 to Windows 10. I did burn a DVD from the ISO but not until after I upgraded to Windows 10.

I also can not get it installed on any of my machines. I just bought a new SSD and I am going to try to install the ISO

Good luck

Try the instructions I posted in the link below.

Make sure you copy the files from the USB flash drive to the hard drive. So far, I've updated six different PCs and laptops using this method without any problems. If this still doesn't work, then you will have to perform a clean install using your Windows 7 or 8 license. It's very important that you activate those copies before you update the system to Windows 10.

Just to update this problem, after trying every installation method and troubleshooting all ended in still getting a failed installation update.

I was finally able to get the update to install, but only after flashing the bios which I am never keen about doing on a laptop & also pre installing every windows update available prior to the upgrade, then running the upgrade via windows update.

Hi its been a few months now, I had thought all 'bugs" would of been fixed by now. I am still unable to upgrade to windows 10, via update and the media creation tool. I am thinking it has something to do with the way alienware boots on startup.
After I do the update, and it tells me windows 10 is installed, it tries to reboot into windows 10. but freezes. Both of the alienware's we have does the exact same thing. any one know of a fix for or trick for this to work? thanks!
