Having trouble accessing media files on USB Hard Drive

Hello,

Am having trouble accessing media files like movies, songs both audio/video files:mad: that I have stored on my USB hard drive. I am unable to play a video file and watch it play without pause for more that 10 or 20 seconds. What could have gone wrong:confused:. I am dependent on storing some of my media files onto this USB hard drive, but when I plug it and play any videos, the player just hangs after playing the file for just few seconds. Please suggest ways to combat this problem. I would also like to know if there are better ways to store my data, may be better USB hard drives or change my storage device from USB hard drive to DVDs.

Does this happen on more than one computer? If so, try copying a file off the drive onto the hard drive of the computer and see if it still happens. If it does, then you must not have a good codec installed to play the file back. If it plays fine on the computer hard drive, then your external drive might be on its way out.

I will surely try doing that and get back. Also, do you mean that my external HDD is going to collapse because of such performance?:eek: Please dont say so...
 
I don't mean it's gonna "collapse" due to the performance, but it may be performing as such because the drive is dying.
