Hd 5670 oc

I am thinking of getting HD 5670 for my next build, I would OC it - The reference design does not need external power connectors, it runs straight off PCIe (yay, the most powerful card to do so). Anyway, how would the power system cope with overclocking?

Since i may be getting a 5670 as well, I'll be interested to see the replys. There a couple 5770's that seem to be the same, or near size and if im not mistaken it's the next perf jump w/ati. but cabled as you say.

Yeah. I was just wondering whether the mobo would provide sufficient power for a (stable) substantial OC

Probably not. The maximum wattage that can be supplied from the PCIe lane is 75W, the rest comes from external power cables. At stock, a 5670 is using 61W, so 14W extra isn't a lot. I'm not sure how far you could push it whilst remaining with in that 14W limit, but it wouldn't be far at all, it probably wouldn't even be worth it

Why are you getting a 5670 anyway? You can get a 4850 for around the same price, but it will be a hell of a lot more powerful. If your power supply isn't up to it, surely it would be better to invest in a better power supply first, before other upgrades, so you have greater freedom and greater stability for any future upgrades

Funny, I've heard you can get 5750's for about the same price as a 4850 and the 5750 is a little better and way more efficient. Don't get me wrong, I loved my 4850, but investing in old tech over new in the same price range doesn't sit well with me.
