So I looked at some tables online and I noticed that the radeon hd 5970 is performing way better than a 7970 in some tests even though it is a three years older card. Can anyone explain to me why amd made such a powerful card three years ago that even todays 7970 can't beat it in many tests?

the 5970 and 6990 are both better and older, because they aren't a single graphics card. Both of them contain 2 separate gpu's on one pcb in crossfire. the 7990 will be the modern comparable card but it will be hard to find benches of it, let alone comparing it to that.

I couldn't of said it better.
