hd capacity problem

i have a brand new WD sata 160gb hd with a brand new computer build:

amd 64 x2 3800+
asus a8n sli premium
windows xp pro

my question is is that it only reads 128gb of the 160gb hard drive. ive tried the whole 48bit lba thing, and my computers components and bios is new enough that it doesnt seem to be the problme at all. what else could i try to get back my storage?

well its a sata hard drive so the options that relate to IDE drives (LBA and 48 bit etc) will have no bearing on it... if you formatted the drive using FAT32 your problem will lie there as there is a limit on how big a FAT32 drive can be.

you could try going into the control panel and looking up administrative tools, then go into computer management>storage>disk management

now if you have any unallocated space on your drive you should be able to reallocate and fill up the drive if the partition capacity has been set wrong.

otherwise you might need to format your drive to get back your missing space

25GB seems like the normal loss for NTFS, but seems like slightly too much..... you'll never get 160GB out of a 160GB HDD, read the HDD101

ok, yes there is 25.39gb of unallocated space. how do i change it to the full 160gb?

there should be something in there about allocating the memory with the admin tools i mentioned... however i haven't used this feature since i installed service pack 2 so i cant be sure that the feature is there.

however, you could just create an extra partition by booting to your windows install CD and creating a new partition with the unallocated space... always handy should you need to reinstall windows :)
