HD-content on 20" DVI or 24" HDMI

Heya guys,

I know this may be a bad title, but I need to aks the following. I want to get a new monitor because I am sick and tired of my lousy 15". I am deciding between a 20" (1600x1200) or a 24" (1900x1200) monitor. My main issue is whether future HD content will work fine on the 20" or whether it would require an HDCP compliant monitor with an HDMI port (the 24"). Please help me out. In terms of price, I would not mind a 20" over the 24".

Actually, either will work.

What you ACTUALLY need is a HDCP complaint video card.

You realize either monitor will have to do quite a bit of scaling, tho.

So neither will look quite as good as an actual HDTV would.
 
the highest hd is 1920 x 1080 i believe, so the 24" is closest to it, but chances are if u are getting HD, it isn't the 1080p, its more likely the 1080i, which is less then 1920 x 1080
 
movies are 1080P, HDTV cable is 720P/1080i

at some point cable is going to switch from mpeg-2 to mpeg 4 layer 10, and go to the higher 1080P format as well

Actually, you need a HDCP video card and a HDCP monitor. I'd go for the 24" if you want to keep the monitor for a while.

It's not less resolution, it's just the difference between progressive and interlace picture.

but either way u can't have it at its native resolution, but i'd still go with the 24" just for a little more room and its closer to the 1080p.

Thats not actually true.

Jan, if you plan on upgrading to Vista and buy a Blu-Ray or HD DVD player for your computer, you will need an HDCP compatible video card and monitor, due to increasing DRM protection.

If you dont have either one, the screen will simply be blank when trying to watch a video. They do that to prevent copying the movie with a program such as Fraps, or other desktop recording software.

thanks for your feedback. I have to admit that I forgot about this thread. I have decided to save up a bit and go for the 24" LCD from LG.

i gaurantee you any amount of money that they will come out with software to allow you to watch hd movies without a hdcp complaint video card/monitor

you had to have a hardware mpeg-2 decompression card to watch dvd's on your computer when they first came out, and look at it now, you can watch dvd's with a no-name generic codec downloaded off the internet using any media player you like, you don't even have to use a dvd player program

i wouldn't sweat it over hdcp compliance
