HD issue? Blue screen possible fix

Hey,
I had an account here before, but I can't remember the username or email to save my life.
Anyhow, heres what happened. I have a fairly new HP desktop computer. Year old? Something happened and now all I get is the blue screen of death they call it that states something like windows has shutdown, if this is the first time you have seen.. etc. I retried in safe mode and a few another options and I can't get it to get off that screen.
So I just happen to have a brand new HD in the package. I install it and re-load vista. Computer works great. I now want to get the data off the HD with issues. I also happen to have one of those reader where you hook the HD up to a USB and then connect to an power plug outlet. As soon as I do that, it goes to the blue screen again. So basically the new HD works fine till I connect the old existing one. How can I get the data off the HD without getting that blue screen. Seems like I have a lot of possibilities. Any help is always appriciated.

What is the error code on the blue screen? You should be able to connect the drive by USB and not have it blue screen unless there are other problems.

I'll post the code tomorrow. Thats the problem, when I connect the drive by USB it instantly goes to the Blue screen. Hoping I could disable something to allow me to get the data of of it. Any other suggestions? I'll post the eror tomorrow. Thanks!
