I have a HD that is working (in the sense that i know it runs, as i was able to get ubuntu on it, and can run that OS from my laptop) but whenever i try are run Windows setup on it, or run ERD commander, it says that there is no HD found. The drive is found when i plug it into a desktop, and runs setup from there, but then i BSOD on startup when i plug it back in.
is there a way to install windows so that it will work on my laptop from another machine?
is there a way to make the HD show up for windows setup so that i can accomplish the above?
thoughts? suggestions?
Thank you.

Go into the bios on your laptop and look for an option to change the SATA mode from ahci to native ide. If there is no such option then you will need to slipstream the SATA controller driver into a new install cd in order to install windows on your laptop.

And you can't install windows onto a drive and then put it in a different system and expect it to bootup. You have to install windows onto the drive in the machine it's gonna reside in.

Then you will need to slipstream the sata controller driver into a new install cd. Or you will have to order recovery cd's from the laptop manufacturer.

I dont think there is anything wrong with the sata controller (also, how do i slipstream that onto a CD) becuase it can be booted from, just not on windows.

I know there is nothing wrong with the sata controller, you just don't understand how laptops work with sata drives. What brand and model of laptop do you have?
