HD Recognition

Good afternoon all,

I have recently purchased a Western Digital 200 GB internal hard drive. When I put it in my own computer it does not show under "My Computer" and it doesn't recognize that a new drive was put in. When I tried it on my brothers computer, it recognized it but again, it was not in "My Computer" and we were unable to access it. We tried it on a third computer and resulted as the same as my own computer. This is the third hard drive of the same kind that I am trying. I am hoping I'm just missing something stupid and would very much like to get the hd up.

Thanks for your help.

If the drive's IDE/PATA, you must be sure the jumper is set correctly; either to master, slave, or cable select. If it's SATA, you may need to set the drive to SATA150 mode if you're mobo doesn't support SATA300.

Check in the bios. Your bother's computer may be set to automatically pick up new drives where as yours is not. Be sure whatever channel the drive is on is set to auto.

Once in windows, you may need to format the drive. Right click on My Computer, then click Manage. Find Disk Management, and see if you're drive is located on the list. Right-click it, format, partition, and assign a drive letter.

just curious, are you planning to eliminate the 80GB hdd and use only the 200? or is this just an upgrade?

The goal was to use both of the hdd's. But now since I have the 200 gb hd working right now, I'm going to stick with that for now. You'll probably see me again in a month or two when I want to get them both working. But the goal for using both failed so I'm using the 200 gb hd now.
