in Everest it doesnt tell me the RPM of my HD, in my Gateway laptop, it does in all my other pc's though, is there something else that will tell me the speed?

Programs usally don't tell you that. You'll probably just have to search for the model of the HD. If it's the one in your sig, I'd guess something around a 4200RPM.

If any drive doesn't maintain the listed speed within a certain percentage of it's ideal(if 4200 4201-4199 or an even smaller if not larger tolerance) the drive would soon fail. Drives are designed to run at one predetermined speed. Benchmark and other diagnostic utilities will be directed to look at data access to drives as far as read/write times rather then the actual spindle speed of the installed drive while stating the rated speed when iding the make and model. You would need a diagnostic hardware setup to examine what your installed is currently running at. Computer lab, etc.

you can use everest ultimate edition trial as it tells you the RPM. Also, quick question, i have a 4200 rpm drive and was told it couldent go to 7200 rpm, just 5400, is this true? hp ze5300

Hard drives themselves are set to one speed by design. This is why you will hear the term backward compatible to ATA100, 66, 33 if intended for ATA133 due to those being slower not faster speeds. A newer model 7,200rpm drive is more or less ATA133, 100 ready with backward compatability to allow for use on older systems. With Raptor you can see 10,000rpm but with Serial ATA not the standard eide controller. But that is a type of drive designed for that operating at the higher speed seen there. Cd and dvd writers or tape drives are usually the ones found with variable speeds due to having faster read times with slower write speeds seen depending on the media used. Double spacing a hard drive(slows the heck out of it) was used to double the amount of hard drive space available by cutting the speed in half. Forget about running any good programs there.
