My HD makes a loud click sound every so often.. i havent seen any special times it does it, but it seems to be every 20 min or so.. mostly at start up n shut down. I think i saw a post like this long ago but I cant find it.. from what i know sounds from your HD mean death.. so i hope not :(

A board problem developing can also cause this to be seen. To give you a quick example the now secondary drive here was making some wild clicking sounds suddenly one and then disappeared. The cpu overheated about a month earlier when a 3rd party cpu cooler's fan quit. Windows suddenly saw locks just when reaching the desktop. A lowered fsb saw a normal machine again but not until a total reinstallation of Windows.

On the new build the drive runs like it's not even there without any sounds. Seagate should have a diagnostic utility for their drives you can download to run on your drive listed in the sig. That will tell you right off if the drive itself has developed a fault. Seagate even has an online diagnostic program that will detect any faults with your drive. http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/index.html

check your power management settings, it might turn its self on or off.... mine does that from time to time at work..

Ouch! At least you can replace that drive alone without rebuilding the system. Have all of your drives been Seagates? I haven't seen one bad WD drive since I've been working on cases in all these years now. Some years back I replaced a failed 1.2gb Seagate drive with a WD 1.4gb that still works well in the old Packard Bell system there. WIN 95 still runs on that system.

i have 2 wd 120g satas. last install (as is this one) they were raid 0, and i got the clicking sound every so often. i thought one of my drives was soon-to-be toast. it sounded like there was play in the spindle and every time it spun, it took up the slack with a click. or the read head was making contact. that's just what it sounded like.

the problem was with a pin in the molex. it lost it's barb and was loose. whenever i went in my case and pushed on it, the clicking went away. since then, i did away with the molex adapters as i got a better psu with sata plugs.

with a fresh install, the clicking went away and i've been running them problem free for alittle over a year now. god, i hope i didn't just jinx myself. i'm gonna backup right now.

It sounds like it could be the PSU doing that to you. If anything I would test another PSU and see if it gives you the same problem.

Another idea would be to try the drive in another case to see if you notice any difference there if you don't have another drive or supply onhand. If the drive suddenly works ok then you would look for the other hardware at fault. By putting another drive in and seeing the same thing that would point at something else that is failing.
