HDD backup program

I'm looking for a program that I can use while backing up files from my computer onto an external hard drive that will allow me to pretty much just tell it what I want on the drive and for it to decide if its already on there or not and not allow it to be put on a second time.

Say, if I wanted to backup "My Pictures" and just dragged and dropped it onto the harddrive, I want it to go through the other folders already on the external and see if any of those pictures already exists on the external. Is that possible?

Well if you try to copy and paste a picture from your computer to your external hard drive and if you have the picture already in the external hard drive it should tell you if you want to replace it or not. That means that you already have the picture in your external hard drive and you dont need to put it there again.

I see. Other than that i dont know such a program but i'll do a search to see what i can find if i find any. :)

its an incremental backup. its possible windows 7 might support it.
Not freeware but ya could look at total commander and synback se backup.

if it was a pictures directory it will look and see from the new directory what is there and transfer to the backup directory without copying everything again.
i think thats what ya want. i always created a backup in the directory's.
