I am looking into getting a new HDD for running Ubuntu by itself. I see that Seagate and Western Digital both have the 320GB 5400RPM 2.5" SATA 3GBPS for around the same price range (Toshiba is $20 less, but lets face it, They SUCK). is there any difference in the reliability of these 2 drives?? I know WD is a good HDD, ive had several, but is the Seagate any better??

Seagate are a pretty good brand just like WD are. Depending what price you can get the drive for, I would get which ever is cheapest between WD Caviar blue or black, Samsung F3 or Seagate, but only the .12 drives, they outperform the .10's, and the .11's had several problems with them. For $38, you can get:

I use and recommend WD everytime - especially for the Caviar Green series - they use low power and the pricepoint is great. they offer great warranty and support, and they fail way less (in my experience) than seagates

you will see better performance running your OS off a 7200rpm drive everytime (although the Caviar Green can spin faster than 5400), which case i'd recommend the Caviar Blue (couple more dollars) or the Caviar Black if you're lookin for great performance.

EDIT - for a laptop go scorpio blue everytime - I pull more busted seagates out of laptops every week than I can count.

I would never take a caviar green. the greens only spin at 5400rpm (not the variable 5400/7200 as stated) and there are many reports of failure. I would stick to the blue/black drives or a .12 seagate drive.

People keep forgetting that the "Greens" were designed for low power usage and to be used as storage drives hence why they're slower.

Ive had mine for about 2 years now and its been perfect,no problems...any hard drive can fail ;)

To the OP,Look into getting a Western Digital Black 64mb cache OR Samsung SpinPoint F3 if its for the OS,They're good fast drives,Probably the fastest 7200Rpm drives you can get.

+1 for what you said about the green drives, saying "I know 5 people that had them fail", 5 drives is a minute sample from the thousands that are produced and sold, so you can't base it off that, otherwise WD wouldn't have the good rep that they have. I know for a fact that if I were rebuilding now and had to pick a storage drive, it would be one of them for the price. Because of the lower performance, they go cheaper, so is even more perfect for storage

As for the other drive recomendations, as much as I wish there were 2.5" F3's with the same performance, there aren't, same goes for caviar black :(

I am not limited to these two drives. I just looked at Newegg for a 5400 320 GB SATA 3GBPS drive and the 49.99 USD WD and Seagate drives were at the less expensive end.

The reason that I am saying 320GB SATA 5400RPM is because I was told by HP that is the highest that I can upgrade to. I think its shit, but warranty is affected by out of spec items. Its a G62 core 2 duo.

If anyone knows any drives that have good, reliable, cool running, and low power, then just speak up. However, I am restricted on budget, no more than $55 USD with shipping.
