HDD death

I am haveing a situation here and just want to make sure that its a dying HDD before I sink any money into the problem.
Im working from an HP G61 laptop with a 500GB 5400RPM SATAII Toshiba HDD in it. But windows (and ubuntu alike) is only seeing 100GB of it. I have reinstalled windows (failed to boot tonight, and 7 attemps at startup repair failed), defragged, tried linux, but it seems that 4/5 of me hard drive has vanished. As far as i can tell Toahiba doesnt have a diag. program, so i havent gave thta a run yet.
Is there anyone thta can shed some light on this, as i dont want to end up reinstalling everything now if im just going to have to reinstall later on a new drive.

yes, the drive had the full capasity just 2 days ago. The only time i ever changed partitions or such was when i intaled Ubuntu on a 50GB partition (to watch movies, i like its player better then WMC).
The utility you provided wont run properly. I runs but when I choose test it says that I need to select a drive, which it wont let me do.

Are you using the dos or windows version? You may have a faulty drive on your hands.

tried both. Both had the same issue.

I too believe this is a faulty drive. Just wanted to be sire before i replace it.

Go to My Computer, right click on the drive, go to properties, Tools, then check for errors. This helped me with my HHD problem, but it's not the same problem as yours. Might as well try. (And thanks to Johnb35 for suggesting this with my problem.)
