HDD Image to RAID?

Hi. I have a pair of Seagate 500mb HDD that I want to raid (Mirror RAID). The problem is that one already has my OS and everything on it. Can I just create an image of that one, then restore it to the second one and set them up as RAID in BIOS?
Or do I have to start from a fresh install to use RAID?

Also, if I can do Mirror RAID like the way I describe above, is there any way to do Striping RAID with an existing drive?

I assume you mean 500GB, and not 500MB.

The best way to implement a RAID array is to start off fresh, and configure it using the RAID utility that loads after POST. There are ways that allow you to split up a single drive among other drives if you want to implement RAID after the fact, but from what I've heard it's all done from within the OS, and isn't an actual RAID array as far as the motherboard / RAID controller is concerned.

I've found some instructions on doing this, but it looks rather difficult and error prone. I guess a better question would be: what is the best option to back up ALL my data? I don't want to ever have to reinstall windows if my HDD quits. Would it be better to just create images on my second HDD, or set up a RAID array? Or is there another superior option?
