HDD said it was 160 Gigs, only lets me use 149 Gigs, where'd the rest go???

I got a 160 gig HDD, when I partitioned it, the most it'd let me use is 149, is that a problem with my mobo? If not than how can I get it back? If so, I'll be getting a new mobo soon anyways, so it won't matter. Thanks
 
ah, alright, thanks. Man, that's be great if all computer things were univeral, things would be so much easier to figure out.
 
When they advertise HDD's they mean that 1Mb is 1000Kb when it actually is 1024Kb. They just want to get a bigger number on the ads.
 
sometimes windows will also secretly take some space and use it for storing partition info this space isnt shown in your hard drives total capacity so the drive will seem a bit smaller(and because of the post above)
 
Well it could be used as the system restore which makes a partition and can use a few GB.

Let's do some math here.

Companies always use 1GB=1,000,000,000 (1 billion) bytes.
But in reality, a GB is 1,073,741,824 bytes

so the company says the hard drive is 160,000,000,000 bytes, which it is. (160 "gigabytes")
but divide 160,000,000,000 bytes by the real gigabyte, 1,073,741,824 bytes, and what do you get? 149.11GB. Viola, there is your number. :)
 
alright, thanks everyone, I get it now, wont be a problem for me though, because I'm going to be getting a 250gig when I'm building my new computer, I'm ordering the parts tomorrow, because I'm only $3 off, but I'm sure my dad can spare the diff., but a person is interested in buying a game that I'm selling so I might have about $15 left over, I'm going to add the "160" to the "250" to make 381.84 GB according to Bobo's accurate sounding math.
