hdmi cable making screen smaller?

just got a new dell xps 7100 with phenom x6 and hd 5770. monitor is asus ve276q. dvi cable seems to work fine. thought id "upgrade" to one of those new fangled hdmi cables. but when i plug it in, i get a border around screen, like its not filling out. also it makes my monitor noisy as hell. what gives?

DVI and HDMI share the same electronics, but have different interfacing. If you are not running sound through your HDMI cable, or you are not using a TV as your monitor, Id use DVI.
