Heat Problems

Hello Guys!
I got a Pentium D 820 for my first build, but I heard it had problems with overheating, so I got a Zalman 7700AlCu. However, when I installed it the first time it said it was running at over 55c idle and almost 70c load, so I reinstalled it, being careful to follow arctic silver's instructions. It still runs at 48c idle and 65c load even with the fan turned up all the way! I wondering if you have any advice for me?

sorry to tell you but those are actually pretty good temps for that processor, all the newer P4's have some serious heat issues. I have the 3.2 Hyperthreading and burned up my first mobo with it, it was getting into the 80's. You have 2 cores so yours produces even more heat. I'm going to be building one in about a week, flying home for christmas and building a new comp for my mother. I got her the 2.8 dual core, don't feel like looking up the model number on it right now. I'll tell you what I get as far as heat once it's all together. If I don't write back by the weekend after next, PM me and remind me. But like I said, that's really not so bad as far as temps on that.

The first generation Prescotts yes, the newer S775 chips runs nice and cool.

Read up. :)

I have a Raidmax X-1 case
1 120mm exhaust fan
1 80mm intake fan right over the proc.
2 80mm fans (1 intake to power supply, 1 exhaust from power supply
Temp inside case is 35-45 (idle-load app.) Same with graphics card (X800GTO Connect3d). I thought the graphics card ran abit hot... Would it help to make the intake fan have a pipe directly to the Zalman 7700's fan? It looks as if the 80 intake's air would be pulled directly out by the 120mm. Air around the case is 20c
There's a mount for a 80/92/120mm fan in the front.
Would it help to mod the case with a 120mm fan out the top?
Anyways, thanks for the replies...

still, that seems to be way to high with a Zalman 7700Alcu. Do you think that a Zalman 9000 series would be much better?

i think thats pretty good temps for the cpu. the intel chips will still run hotter than amd counterparts

S775? never heard of it, I've got an LGA775 chipset in mine and I would like you to define "nice and cool", would 80 degrees qualify?

Land Grid Array 775. I have a P4D 830 at 3Ghz.

Idle: 39c
Load x1 49c (full load using CPU Burn-in)
Load x2 59c (two instances to stress both cores)

It should also be noted that I hardly use what I'd call good cooling.

As Yeti said, theres definitely something going on there.

yeah, it burned up my mobo is what it did, I'm on my second one now, cooler than it was, but still hitting upper 60's quite easily under load. I've got a thermaltake jungle on it too which was supposed to be fairly decent, and I know it's seated well. The cpu's a 640, but still a Prescott core, so does that mean it is one of the hot ones or is something still not right and it should be cooler?

It burned up your motherboard?!

So,do you think that I need to change my fan setup for my case?
Well, esentially what you are doing (or attempting to do) when you add case fans is create a lower case temperature. Of course you can't get your case temp below room temp, but close is good, I'd say definitly within 10C. So what will a lower case temp get you? Look at the graph - basically every degree you drop in case temp you will drop in CPU temp. The other graph just illustrates the variation of the CPU load as well as the real advantage of a good HSF.

P4 3.4 helppp

Hey, ive just made my first system
my cpu is:

LGA P4 3.4ghz 2mb L2 cache 800fsb

I am using the standars heatsink/fan which came with it. When i am doing nothing really like on msn or the internet it averages at 55 degrees!

Is this right????
When i play games it goes up to a whopping 70 degrees!!!

Ive bought a Zalman CNPS9500 and should be getting it tomorrow :D

any ideas, im not sure if this is correct temperature but will the zalman cnps9500 do the job?

I'd be a little worried about 70C though its not really dangerous (though something isn't right regardless). The CPNS9500 should be much better than stock assuming its mounted correctly. Make sure you watch the case temperature though to be sure that isn't the true culprit.

Hmm

I will soon have 8 80mm fans on the side of my case and also i have 1 120mm fan on the front (intake) and 1 120mm fan on the back (exhaust)

I hope the heatsink will help solve this problem

8 fans on the of the case  ? Which way are they blowing? Though more fans are usually better, there is a limit at which the fans' flows will actually cause negating effects, and this is assuming they are blowing in the optimum direction. You might want to play around with those fans (ie leaving certain one on/off, switching directions) to see what gives you the best case temp.

LOL!

Well 8 fans is what i was thinking of getting cos i want it to be cold ><
i have 2x 6800GS's so i want them cold

If 8 is too much i think i will go for 4 fans

They will be blowing air towards the mobo

@ mat2317 - this thread is kinda getting hijacked, if you have concerns about your system you can start a new thread :)

@Jet - from what you said about your case temp, your cpu temp is pretty close to what is predicted for 80W (roughly what your cpu might put out at load). Though a better HSF would help, I would first try to get better ventilation. A side note: if possible it helps to know the temp right above the HSF as this is the "case temp" as defined by cpu manufacturers and is the temp that matters to performance (temps vary substantially within the case).

Sorry to be a pain again :p

But what software do u guys use to get the temperatures from the cpu? I use SpeedFan but i dont think its all that :/
