Heat sink/Spreader

Most high end ram come with heat spreaders now, Ive read some reviews that claim they do better but then I have seen reviews that said no difference or worse. So I guess it depends on the spreaders and how far apart your ram slots are.
 
If you look at performance memory you will see those already in use. But they generally made for that specific brand and type. There are other 3rd party memory coolers that are more effective while heat shields like those are a little rare on value ram. Corsair xms series, Kingston Hyper X, and other quality brands of performance memory will see the shields as standard items.
 
I have put those in my rams, and when I play a heavy game and if you touch them, you'll notice that they have become hot. So, it works probably?
 
They are supposed to be the item that gets heated up not the memory installed. Those act very much the same way the heat sink for a cpu works. Sometime you will also see some type of thermal paste or compound used as well.
 
so you guys think they're worth the $? right now i have 512mb but i just ordered another stick of 512 so ill have 1024mb and im thinking of getting one for each

If the ram doesn't come with heatspreaders it probably doesn't need it. And if you're going to OC, i recommend you don't get the sticks without the heatsinks as they are usually generic or value ram.
 
For one if you are planning to oc to start off with you would be looking at performance memory specifically. For the most part those will already come with heat spreaders included on the dimms. Other options for cooling memory are 3rd party memory coolers not spreaders but more like heat sinks that fit over the memory. These will often include a par of small fans.
 
Yeah no OCing for me, just plain olde memory needed. Thanks for the help. OCing is just over clocking it to make it run faster right?
 
Sometimes tweaking a system by selecting the right hardware combination will go a lot further performance wise then ocing this or that. But value memory isn't the type you would run for that anyways.Without caution taken and good cooling methods inplace ocing can easily become "overcooking" rather then simply overclocking. :eek: :(
 
Most ocers have the extra cash to throw at hardwares and cooling aparatus since that stresses hardwares where keeping temps as low as possible sometimes requires a liquid cooling setup. OCing doesn't always means any specific performance gain is seen. When running a low end model cpu or slower memory ocing is used to bring clock speeds upto the same or more at times of the faster speeds seen stock with the higher model cpu or faster memory.

Giving one example here was simply going from 2.21ghz to 3ghz by upgrading while others would raise the cpu multiplier on slower model. Where I went with DDR2 800 memory someone else will oc 667mhz memory to see that run faster. If you run stock heat sink/fan combos you would generally run everything at the stock settings there to avoid damage.
