Heat sink

today i opened up my computer to change the HD but when i opened it i saw something was loose inside, it was the heat sink for some chip on the mb, i think it is the heat sink for the on board video card or whatever, what happens if it does have a heat sink? i while ago the computer "froze" showing bars as if it was a closed tv channel except that these bars were black and white and not color bars.

It could very possibly be the heat sink for the on board video card. Get yourself some thermal compound and reattach it.

It didn't just detached from its place, somehow the soldering that holds the little metal bar that the clip attaches to came off the board, the heat sink doesnt stay on its place anymore. Or that thermal compound you mention adheres to the chip?
