Heatsink compound on C2D

My intel C2D E6300 didn't came bundled with heat paste.And i am quite sure that i didn't put any paste on it while installing it.Now my idle temp is 40*C.Now my fren has gave me heatsink compound paste which come bundle with pinless P4 CPU.Can i put this paste on my C2D?If i put it will this work and keep my CPU cool?Pls send ans as soon as possible.
 
If you got a retail E6300 the paste is preapplied to the heatsink. Check before you put more on and be sure to clean any old paste off.

40C isn't that bad for idle temps, it should still be staying below 50 and well below the case limit of ~60 under load
