Heatsink question??

ok, i bought a CPU off a mate coz he was upgradin and i got it at a nice price :). when he sent it to me in the post, he had to take the heatsink off it so it would fit in the box, it was a freezer 64 heatsink. so now ive got thermal paste of the cpu and on the bottom of the heat sink from when he had it running. so how do i put the heatsink back on the cpu, do i need to get rid of the thermal paste on the two things, somehow?? or can i put the heatsink straight back on the cpu with the thermal paste from last time, or do i have to buy some more thermal pate and clean the two parts that have the thermal paste still on them?? if i need to buy more, am i better off just buyin a new heatsink? and can someone tell me how much paste to put on and how to install it without any hassels.

Well, I would say save yourself the trouble and buy a $20 heatsink and fan that have directions. They are very easy to install even for beginners, but make sure you buy some thermal grease if it does not come with it. AND MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE RIGHT SOCKET HEATSICK! You would be surprised how many people screw that up. Good luck.
 
You're always suppose to reapply thermal paste when you remove the heatsync. That heatsync is pretty decent, so I'd just stick with it rather than getting a whole new one. Most come with cheap thermal paste. I know what I got with that heatsync when I last had it was horrible. It wouldn't even stick to anything!

Why don't you actually answer his question?

You can try installing it just using the thermal paste that is on the 2 components. It will run just fine, but if your temps are too high, then you need to buy new stuff, clean the old off with a paper towel and a little alcohol if necessary, and reapply it.
 
I believe I did answer his question. He is obviously new to computers and chances are that just sticking it on the cpu by thermal paste and nothing more it will eventually fall off if it is a heavy heatsink like mine. Most clip in.
 
im not that new to comps, i just have never done the cpu part before, just about everything else tho. i just didnt want to screw it up. i was looking at the zalman CNPS9500, is this worth the extra money or am i better off just stickin to the heatsink that ive got and gettin some more paste?
 
Just try the heatsink you have now and see what the temps are. If they are high, get new paste, or a whole new HSF.
 
yeah ok, but if it doesnt work good, can anyone reccomend a good heatsink and fan to suit an amd 939 3800+??
