A week ago I noticed a funny smell coming out of my computer (Burnt plastic) , since then my computer has sone serious problems. I have to try start it may times before it runs. It freezes sometimes after couple of minutes after I start it. The two fans are running fine. People at work told me it could be a capacitor proble, power supply. Please, can someone help me on that matter?

possible power supply.

Best bet is to open her up and take a look inside, see if you can see any signs of burning, like dark patches almost soot like.

Also get your nose in there and have a sniff around, see if you can determine where the smell is coming from.

Oh dont forget to disconnect the power before shoving your nose in ;)

Somethings fried. Seriously stop turning it on or you will probably just make it worst. Open up your case and look for the tell-tale signs of a component shorting out i.e. scorch marks, burning smell etc. It could very well be your PSU in which case you shud just replace it.

check your power supply.

we were testing computers at school for faults and one of the power supplies started to burn up, then it p!ssed out with smoke and stunk like burnt plastic. so you have any other cooling apart from fans?

Thanks guys for the info! But now i have a more serious problem. I tried to switch from windows 2000 pro. to Xp, cause I could'nt do my back-up (someone tolde me it would work with windows XP) now when I start my computer it does the RAM test ( BIOS) after that nothing. The operating system won't start, the screen stays black. What should I do?
