Help a computer dummy

Hi. You could say I don't know much about computers and I am needing a little help trying to figure out why mine is running so slowly. I was given an older lap top with windows 2000, and a Pentiam 3. I know that this is old and out dated, but I think I have stuff ?spyware? running all the time making it even slower. How do I understand what CPU usage is and what processes are? What is PF usage, commit charge,physical memory, and kernal memory? What are handles, and threads? Any help would be welcomed.

Well for starter do you have anti virus and spy ware protection? If so what companies? If not invest in some, my two favorites are avg and adaware and you can find both on cnet.com.
