hi my new computer is :

cpu : AMD Athlon 64 (3500+) - 512 Cache [939 PIN]-Venice Core

mobo : GA-K8N Ultra-9

ram : samsung DDR 512MB 400MHZ

graphics card : Diamond Viper X800XL 256MB PCIe

case : Sunbeam Acrylic

hard drive : 40gb wd (from my old computer)

cd : 52x

now my question is , i have 256 ram at home that works at 333mhz should i add even though it isnt 400mhz ?

really? I've never had a problem with RAM running at different speeds.... Of course I've never used DDR ram though.. Maybe its picky....

I know the older SDRam: PC66, PC100, PC133 were all interchangeable, and could run together! Of course, if your board could only handle PC100, then the 133 wouldn't do much good, but if your board takes 133, and you put 1 stick 66, and 1 stick 133 in it, as long as the 133 stick is in the 1st slot, it would run just fine.

they will both work together but the 400Mhz one will operate at 333Mhz, so you will have a mother of a bottleneck to deal with and it moght not even be worth it upgrading the RAM capacity.

and if i put 256mb that runs at 400mhz will that be good ?

are you actually runny out of memory? what are u doing with the computer? if you put in the 256 of pc2700 all your pc3200 memory will run at pc2700 ie 166 mhz. also if you want dual channel to double your throughput i dont suggest adding the other stick of 256.

dang pc3200 now runs at 400 mhz? where do you find those? hehe just giving you a hard time.

you can certainly add it... the details of what happens clock-wise are outlined in RAM 101.

as far as i know, all the ram need to run at the same speed,.. so probably it wont work.
It will work.

A 33Mhz drop is hardly a mother of a bottleneck

Well if he's got 1x512 right now there's no dual channelin happening anyways.

No. PC3200 runs at 200MHz. :P

pc3200 runs at 200 mhz but since it runs on both the rise and fall cycle its double data hence they call it ddr400
Hehe you redeemed yourself heh

so what u r all saying is that if i want it to work well to buy 512 ram @ 400mhz
so that i will have 2*512mb ram

yeah i thought pc 3200 ram runs at 200mhz..atleast mines does
And you'd be correct in saying so :) PC3200 runs at 200Mhz clock (with DDR400) on an 8 byte bus gives us the magic number ... 400x8 = 3200 :)
